George Tenet    

Director, CIA (1997-2004)

George J. Tenet is currently Chairman of Allen and Company LLC, a privately held investment bank based in New York. Previously, Mr. Tenet served under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush as the 18th Director of Central Intelligence from 1997 to 2004. In this position, he led the United States Intelligence Community and presided over the daily activities of the Central Intelligence Agency.

From 1995 to 1997, Mr. Tenet served as Deputy Director of Central Intelligence. Earlier in his career, he served in a number of positions including as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Intelligence Programs at the National Security Council and as Staff Director of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. From September 2004 to December 2007, Tenet served as Distinguished Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.

Mr. Tenet has received many awards for his public service. In December 2004, President George W. Bush awarded Mr. Tenet the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian honor. In addition, Mr. Tenet was awarded the two highest decorations for leadership from the Central Intelligence Agency and the United States Intelligence Community—the Distinguished Intelligence Medal and the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal. In February 2005, the Anti-Defamation League awarded him America's Democratic Legacy Award, the organization’s highest honor. America’s friends and allies have also recognized Mr. Tenet’s efforts to strengthen global security. Among his foreign decorations are the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Polish Commander’s Cross with Star, the Order of the Star of Romania in the rank of Grand Officer and the Jordanian Independence Medal of Honor. He is the first American to receive the Egyptian Order of Merit (First Class) and the first non-Canadian to be awarded the Canadian Security Intelligence Service Gold Medal.

Mr. Tenet received a BSFS from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and a MIA from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He also holds honorary doctorates from Georgetown University, University of Oklahoma, Rochester Institute of Technology and Joint Military Intelligence College.

Mr. Tenet is the author of At the Center of the Storm (2007), a memoir of his life in the CIA. He is married to Stephanie Glakas-Tenet, also a national best-selling author.
