Lisa Ling

Award-Winning Journalist & Host of "Our America"

A groundbreaking journalist and human rights advocate, Lisa Ling is the executive producer and host of Our America on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). She is a contributor to Nightline, the former host of National Geographic Explorer, a former co-host of The View, and a former field correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show.

From stories about gang rape in the Congo to bride-burning in India, Ling has traveled the globe to cover vitally important events that much of the world chooses to ignore. As the first female host of Explorer, she reported on the looting of antiquities in war-torn Iraq, investigated the increasingly deadly drug war in Colombia, examined the complex issues surrounding China's one-child policy, and journeyed more than 1,600 feet to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean in a high-tech submersible in search of gold treasure. During Explorer's 2005 season, Ling explored the phenomenon of female suicide bombers and the hidden and dangerous culture inside American prisons.

An avid supporter of women worldwide, Ling believes all women need an open forum through which to share their secrets, speak their minds, and gain power and confidence through understanding and support. As a result, she co-founded SecretSocietyofWomen.com with Sophia Kim.

Ling has been working in television for nearly 20 years. Altogether, she has reported from more than two dozen countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Colombia, Algeria, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Japan, India, and Iran. Her position as a role model for today's youth is one she embraces. In 2001, she hosted the television special Teen People's 20 Teens Who Will Change the World and her incredible footage shot following the Taliban's takeover in Afghanistan helped provide insight for The Day It All Changed, a teen forum she led for the WB Network. She has produced eight documentaries for PBS, several of which have won awards.

Ling was a special correspondent for CNN's Planet in Peril series and is a contributing editor for USA Today's USA Weekend magazine. She is the co-author of Mother, Daughter, Sister, Bride: Rituals of Womanhood and Somewhere Inside: One Sister's Captivity in North Korea and the Other's Fight to Bring Her Home, which she penned with her sister, Laura. A contributor to www.iVolunteer.org, Ling also serves on the board of directors for the California Museum.
