Driver was born in San Diego, California, and moved to the town of Mishawaka, Indiana, where he was raised, when he was seven years old. His mother, Nancy Wright, is a paralegal, and his father, Joe Driver, is a preacher.

A few months after the events of 9/11, Driver joined the United States Marine Corps. He served for two years and eight months before being deployed to Iraq. Following his graduation from Juilliard in 2009, Driver began acting in New York City, appearing in both Broadway and off-Broadway productions, while occasionally working as a busboy and waiter. Notable productions Driver had roles in include Angels In America and Look Back in Anger.

In 2012, Driver was cast in the HBO comedy-drama series Girls, as the emotionally unstable Adam Sackler, the boyfriend of the lead character Hannah Horvath. During the show's run, he received three nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role. The same year, Driver played supporting roles in two critically acclaimed films, as telegraph and cipher officer Samuel Beckwith in Steven Spielberg's historical drama Lincoln, and Lev Shapiro in Noah Baumbach's comedy-drama Frances Ha.

In 2015, he starred as villain Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, episode VII in the series, catapulting him into international fame. Driver followed his appearance in The Force Awakens by starring in Martin Scorsese's Silence. He starred in Jim Jarmusch's Paterson, for which he received multiple nominations for Best Actor from critics associations, winning several, including the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor. He reprised his role as Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which was released in December of 2017.

In 2018, Driver portrayed a Jewish police detective, Phillip "Flip" Zimmerman, who helps infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan in Spike Lee's comedy-drama BlacKkKlansman. The film premiered at Cannes Film Festival and was theatrically released in August of 2018. He received critical acclaim for his performance in the film and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor.

He appeared in Jim Jarmusch's film The Dead Don't Die, which premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. He reprised his role as Kylo Ren in Star Wars: Rise of the Skywalker, episode IX in the Star Wars film series.
