Afzal Habib and Sabrina-Natasha Habib
Cofounders of Kidogo
Afzal Habib is a serial social entrepreneur who leads Kidogo’s Strategy & Finance. Prior to co-founding Kidogo, he was a Management Consultant at the Boston Consulting Group where he advised Fortune 500 clients in the Telecommunications, Consumer Goods, and Financial Services sectors. Afzal has experience working with CARE International’s Enterprise Development Unit in Bangladesh and with the Acumen Fund in Tanzania building a pipeline of impact investments in the region. He has co-authored 2 award-winning business plans presented at the Harvard Social Enterprise Conference and a business case published by NextBillion.net and the William Davidson Institute. Afzal holds an Honours International Bachelors of Business Administration, with a specialization in strategic management and social entrepreneurship, from the Schulich School of Business, York University, where he was a Loran Scholar. He was recognized in Corporate Knights Magazine as Canada’s Top 30 Under 30.
Sabrina Natasha Habib is the co-founder and chief exploration officer at Kidogo, where she leads the organization’s strategy, partnerships and impact. Prior to Kidogo, Sabrina spent three years working with the Aga Khan Development Network in East Africa, managing an Integrated Primary Health Care Project and the Social Innovations portfolio of a $13.5 million maternal and child health grant. It was during this time that Sabrina first encountered the problem of ‘babycare centers’ in Nairobi’s slums. Dissatisfied with the status quo and traditional approaches to development, Sabrina launched Kidogo in 2014 as a sustainable and scalable social enterprise. Sabrina holds an Honors Bachelor of Science from McMaster University and is completing her Master in Public Administration in Development Practice at Columbia University, where she is a Global Policy Research Fellow. Sabrina has worked with the UN’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network to promote a child-integrated approach to the post-2015 global agenda. She is an enthusiastic writer, having authored a book, Backwards & Forwards: My Journey Through Africa and frequently contributes to publications, including the World Policy Journal.
Kidogo aims to unlock the potential of young children living in East Africa’s informal settlements by providing high-quality, holistic, early childhood care and education for less than one dollar per day. Through its innovative ‘hub & spoke’ model, Kidogo combines the sustainability of best practice ‘hub’ centers that provide daycare and preschool services to working mothers, with the scalability of a microfranchising program to support local “Mamapreneurs” starting or growing their own childcare ‘spokes.’ By empowering mothers, and giving young children the best start to life, Kidogo is transforming the trajectory of families living in slums and helping break the cycle of poverty.
