Aidan Dwyer

Young Naturalist Award, American Museum of Natural History International Speaker on Innovation and Solar Design CEO Sequence Design LTD

Aidan Dwyer, age 15, was one of twelve students to receive the 2011 Young Naturalist Award from the American Museum of Natural History in New York for creating an innovative approach to collecting sunlight in photovoltaic arrays. Dwyer’s investigation into the mathematical relationship of the arrangement of branches and leaves in deciduous trees led to his discovery that these species utilized the Fibonacci Sequence in their branch and leaf design. Dwyer transformed this organic concept into a photovoltaic array based upon the Fibonacci pattern of an oak tree and conducted experiments comparing his design to conventional solar panel arrays. After computer analysis, Dwyer discovered that his Fibonacci tree design surpassed the performance of conventional methods in sunlight collection and utilized the greatest quantity of PV panels within the least amount of physical space, making it a versatile and aesthetically pleasing solution for confined and obstructed urban areas.

Aidan Dwyer’s innovation led him to winning the Young Naturalist Award from the American Museum of Natural History in New York in 2011 and, since then, the Fibonacci design for solar arrays has made the solar industry stand up and take notice. Dwyer, who was recently named to Wired Magazine’s Smart List: 50 People Who Will Change the World, has presented his innovative concepts at technical conferences, universities and colleges around the globe. Aidan has appeared as a keynote speaker along with world leaders at the opening ceremony of the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He has given inspiring presentations that have received standing ovations at technical conferences including POP!Tech and the Proctor & Gamble World Design Meeting. Aidan was named as a National Finalist in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge for his design of a portable and modular Fibonacci solar generator. Dwyer’s ideas have even caught the attention of the art world when he was featured in a short documentary by the world-renown filmmaker Albert Maysles that premiered at the 2013 Sundance and NYC Tribecca Film Festivals. The film is currently on international tour.

In 2012, Aidan Dwyer founded Sequence Design Ltd. with the goal of developing cutting-edge solar technology and to bring new life to the way we create power from the sun. The company’s primary mission is to foster partnerships both here in the United States and internationally to move the world forward to a sustainable future and to make solar power available to developing regions where power is needed the most. Aidan is committed to education and fostering new ideas for the next generation of young innovators and students the around the world.
