Director Museum of Islamic Art

Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums Authority appointed Aisha Al Khater as the new Director of the Museum of Islamic Art following the departure of Dr Oliver Watson.

Commenting on the new appointment Abdulla Al Najjar, CEO of Qatar Museums Authority stated: “QMA is proud that it has prepared the first Qatari woman to be in charge of the Museum of Islamic Art. We are confident that Ms Aisha Al Khater will be an excellent director of this important cultural institution in the region, which has attract over 500,000 visitors since its opening. Through her dedication to her job, Ms Aisha Al Khater has demonstrated that she is a good example for Qatari women capable of occupying top managerial positions in all sectors. We are very proud of her. I congratulate her and wish her the best of luck.”

As Director of the Museum of Islamic Art, Al Khater’s role is to supervise museum daily operations, education activities, to design its long-term strategy and to recruit qualified staff to implement it.

Al Khater started with MIA in the events team and later completed her post graduate diploma in Islamic Art from School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London. She was later appointed as Deputy Director of MIA.

The Museum of Islamic Art was designed by I.M Pei and exhibits a splendid collection of artefacts. It also has a library and a temporary exhibition hall where various exhibitions take place throughout the year.
