Senegalese-American Hip-Hop Recording Artist & Producer; Social Impact Entrepreneur & Founder of Akoin
Akon, a Senegalese-American singer-songwriter, record producer, and philanthropist, is recognized for his significant impact both in the music industry and in philanthropic endeavors. He is the founder of Konvict Muzik, which was launched in 2004, and KonLive Distribution, which was established in 2003. His notable contributions to music include his debut studio album "Trouble," featuring hit singles such as "Locked Up" and "Lonely." His second album, "Konvicted," received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album and included the number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, "I Wanna Love You." In addition to his solo work, Akon has worked in production and songwriting for artists like Michael Jackson and Snoop Dogg and has guest performed on 23 Billboard Hot 100 entries for other artists. In 2019, Akon released two albums, "El Negreeto" and "Akonda."
His philanthropic efforts are also noteworthy, having launched Akon Lighting Africa in 2014, a project that has brought solar power to 18 countries on the African continent. This initiative has significantly improved the safety, health, and well-being of millions of Africans. He is also the founder of the Konfidence Foundation, a charity aimed at supporting underprivileged children in Africa. Additionally, Akon has ventured into the world of television and film, working on a reality TV show titled "My Brother's Keeper" and a movie named "Illegal Alien" based on his life.
Currently, Akon is developing a sustainable and eco-tourism smart city in Senegal, referred to as Akon City. The city, scheduled for completion in 2028, will operate on a cryptocurrency-based economy using his cryptocurrency, Akoin.
