His sister, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, went on to become a legendary sprinter, and the two were incredibly close, both personally and professionally. Joyner’s track career flourished at Arkansas State University, where he became a three-time NCAA All-American and was recognized as one of the best collegiate triple jumpers of his time.

Joyner's crowning achievement came at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where he won the gold medal in the triple jump, making him the first American to do so in 80 years. After Florence’s untimely death in 1998, Joyner continued to honor her legacy, promoting fitness and health awareness and supporting young athletes in achieving their dreams. He jump-started the Florence Griffith Joyner charity and scholarship fun and began directing the Flo Jo Community Empowerment Foundation.

In addition to his role as a coach, Joyner has devoted much of his life to mentoring aspiring track and field athletes. He has served as a coach for the USA Track & Field team, sharing his experience and expertise with the next generation.
