President, OXO and Universal Design Expert.

Alex Lee is president of OXO, the New York City based maker of Good Grips and other brands of well-loved household tools for the kitchen and many other parts of the home. Built on the philosophy of Universal Design, OXO strives to provide innovative consumer products that make everyday living easier.

A left-brain/right-brain executive, Alex came to OXO in 1994 with an unusual mix of experiencea BFA in Product Design from Parsons School of Design, eight years as an award winning designer at Michael Graves, Architect and an MBA from Harvard Business School. In 1996, Alex assumed his current role of president of OXO. Under his stewardship, the companys revenue has grown twenty-fold with sales in 55 countries. Alex has won numerous awards during his time at OXO including the Designer of the Year Award by Bon Appetit Magazine and being named one of Forty Under Forty: New Yorks Rising Stars by Crains New York Business Magazine in 2000. The use of Universal Design as a business strategy has also made OXO and Alex the subject of numerous articles in newspapers, magazines and trade journals from The New York Times and The Washington Post to Asahi Shimbun in Japan.

Universal Design as a Business Strategy

In his talk, Alex Lee, President of OXO will share how the use of Universal Design designing and producing products that are easy to use for the widest range of people created a sustained growth strategy for OXO. By making products that are easy to use by the aging population, yet cool enough to be relevant to the young generation, OXO has significantly increased the audience for their products. As Baby Boomers turn 60, the United States and other 1st world countries are seeing a whole new generation of senior citizens who are active and youthful. Products that are designed with their needs in mind and used by a board spectrum of users without the stigma of a geriatric tool are welcome options for this growing segment.

OXOs keen focus on identifying user pet peeves and offering tangible solutions to user problems in many product categories, has created OXO brand loyalists of all ages. The company continues to expand its reach into every room of the house while maintaining its creative and entrepreneurial culture. Alex will discuss OXOs structure, culture, and innovative processes.
