Millions fell in love with Newell’s voice as they brought Wade "Unique" Adams to life on "Glee" over the course of four seasons, offering a groundbreaking and influential depiction of one of network television’s very first transgender characters.

Newell introduced a simmering and slick style on their Power EP in 2016, which hit #4 on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart and yielded the fan favorites "This Ain’t Over," "Basically Over You (B.O.Y.)" and "Nobody To Love." They also lent their vocal prowess to several collaborations including Blonde’s "All Cried Out" and DJ Cassidy’s "Kill The Lights" with Jess Glynne and Nile Rodgers, the latter of which clinched #1 on the Billboard Dance/Club chart.

In 2018, Newell, fulfilling a dream to be on Broadway, joined the revival of "Once on This Island" in the role of Asaka before returning to the small screen in NBC’s new musical drama "Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist." In 2023, they won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for their role in "Shucked." Newell and J. Harrison Ghee were the first openly non-binary actors to be nominated for and win a Tony.
