Global Chief Investment Officer, UBS AG

Alexander Friedman is the global chief investment officer of UBS AG, overseeing the investment policy and strategy for about $1.6 trillion in assets. A former chief financial officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Friedman joined the foundation after Warren Buffett's historic gift in 2006 and served as CFO during a period when the foundation more than doubled in size. Friedman also managed a private investment vehicle, Asymmetry; served as a senior advisor to the international investment firm Lazard; and sat on the supervisory board of Actis, an emerging-market private equity firm. He was a White House fellow in the Clinton administration and an assistant to the U.S. secretary of defense. Friedman is a board member of several nonprofits and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is a regular contributor to Bloomberg, CNBC and other financial media. Friedman holds a J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School and a B.A. from Princeton.
