Alexander Mooney

U.S. Representative for West Virginia's 2nd Congressional District

Alex Mooney is the U.S. Representative for West Virginia's 2nd congressional district since 2015. He is a member of the Republican Party. He served in the Maryland State Senate, representing District 3, from 1999 to 2011 and is a former Chairman of the Maryland Republican Party. He is the first Hispanic elected to Congress from West Virginia.

From 1993 to 1995, Senator Mooney served as an aide to Western Maryland Congressman Roscoe Bartlett.  He then worked as a legislative analyst for the House Republican Conference Committee directed by Congressman John Boehner of Ohio – now the Minority Leader.  Senator Mooney later left Capitol Hill to work for a pro-family, conservative educational organization.

In 1998 at the age of 27, Senator Mooney was elected the youngest and only Hispanic member of the Maryland State Senate.  After being targeted in redistricting, Senator Mooney was re-elected in 2002 in the most expensive State Senate race in Maryland’s history.

He was re-elected again in 2006 and still serves in the State Senate today.  The legislature in Maryland is a part-time job (session runs January-April). Senator Mooney sits on the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee.

When not legislating, Senator Mooney also serves as the Executive Director of the National Journalism Center.
