Alison Mariella Désir is an activist, author, and mental health advocate known for her deep commitment to using running as a tool for social change. She is the founder of Harlem Run and initiated a 240-mile run from Harlem to Washington, D.C., to raise money for Planned Parenthood. Désir also established Run 4 All Women, further advocating for social issues through athletics. She authored the book "Running While Black," which explores how running can be a transformational tool for community building and personal health, particularly within BIPOC communities.
Désir is not only passionate about community and fitness but also emphasizes the critical link between movement and mental health. Her own experiences with running have significantly aided in managing her depression and fostering connections within her community. She continues to inspire audiences by discussing the benefits of movement and outdoor activities on mental wellness. Additionally, Désir hosts the podcast "Finding Meaning (on the RUN)," where she shares insights on the intersection of running and meaningful living.
Recognized by Women's Running as one of twenty women changing the sport and the world, Désir's influence is further acknowledged in Under Armor’s global campaign, "Unlike Any." This campaign celebrates female athletes who excel beyond gender comparisons. She holds a BA in History, MA in Latin American and Caribbean Regional Studies, and an MA in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University. Through her advocacy, writing, and speaking, Désir continues to be a pivotal figure in promoting health, wellness, and equality.
