Amal Kassir

Syrian-American Muslim Storytelling Activist & Poet

Amal Kassir is a Syrian-American international spoken word poet. She started as a slam poet with Denver’s Minor Disturbance youth poetry team who collectively took the crown at Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Festival in 2012. She has since performed in 12 countries and 100+ venues ranging from orphanages to refugee camps to youth prisons to churches to schools. She is a two times TEDx Speaker, known for her work, "The Muslim on the Airplane." In 2018, she spoke in Geneva at the United Nations in support of women who have been wrongfully imprisoned and tortured in Syria.

Historically, her work has been heavily influenced by the war in Syria, her experience as an "other" in the United States, and the plight of the oppressed all over the world. She has recently undertaken radical healing as part of her work and she infuses that in all that she teaches. Kassir is the founder of the Writing Hour and House of Amal, both of which are born from the isolation and need for guidance during the darkness of the COVID-19 Pandemic. She offers speaker coaching, one-on-one mentorship, workshops, and more. You can catch her every Wednesday on the Writing Hour where she dedicates 60 minutes to the global community to delve into deep topics and cultivate our identities as writers.
