Amber Ruffin
Comedian & Writer for "Late Night with Seth Meyers'; First Black Woman to Write for a Late-Night Network Talk Show; Co-Author, "You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey"
Amber Ruffin, an accomplished comedian, writer, and actress, has had a significant impact on the entertainment industry. Starting her career in local theater and improv in Omaha in 2001, Ruffin gradually escalated her career by moving to Chicago, where she honed her skills as a writer and performer with the improv comedy troupe Boom Chicago Amsterdam. Her talent did not go unnoticed; in 2014, she joined the writing team of "Late Night with Seth Meyers," making history as the first Black woman to write for a late-night network talk show in the United States. Around the same time, Ruffin also wrote for Comedy Central shows "Detroiters" and "Drunk History."
As Ruffin's career progressed, she made several notable accomplishments that expanded her portfolio and influence. She hosted the 70th Writers Guild of America awards ceremony in 2018, and in 2020, she launched her own late-night talk show, "The Amber Ruffin Show," on Peacock and ran for one season. Further expanding her reach, Ruffin co-authored a book with her sister, Lacey Lamar, titled "You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey: Crazy Stories about Racism," which earned a spot on the New York Times Best Seller list in January 2021. Their follow-up "The World Record Book of Racist Stories" was published in 2023. Ruffin also co-founded the production company Straight to Cards with writing partner Jenny Hagel.
Ruffin's recent ventures include co-writing the Broadway-bound musical adaptation of "Some Like It Hot" with Matthew Lopez and voicing the character Purple in the M&M's advertising campaign. Additionally, she's appeared in numerous TV shows, including "A Black Lady Sketch Show" and "Big Mouth," and has contributed to TV specials such as the "75th Golden Globe Awards" and the "76th Golden Globe Awards."
