Andrea Navedo

Actress Known for Her Role as Xiomara "Xo" Villanueva in "Jane the Virgin"

Andrea Navedo is an American actress. She began her career on the daytime soap operas One Life to Live and Guiding Light, and in later years had several supporting roles on primetime television. In 2014, Navedo began starring as Xiomara "Xo" Villanueva in The CW comedy-drama series, Jane the Virgin.

Navedo was born in The Bronx and graduated from the State University of New York at Old Westbury in 1998 with a BA in Communicative and Creative Arts and a concentration of Theater.

Navedo said that she's second generation: "I grew up Puerto Rican in New York. Whenever we went to see Abuela, she was watching telenovelas. So we would watch, too. That’s the way I bonded with her." Navedo said she relates to her Jane the Virgin character because her mother was a young single mother as well. Navdeo said: "I saw her go from an abusive marriage with my stepfather {and} on welfare — to attending a non-profit organization called 'The Puerto Rican Institute' to get training to work in an office; going back to school for six months and then getting a job, getting off welfare and leaving the abusive marriage."

From 1995 to 1997 she played the role of Linda Soto in the ABC daytime soap opera, One Life to Live. In 1999, she joined the cast of CBS soap opera Guiding Light as Theresa Sandoval.

From 2001 to 2004, Navedo had a recurring role on the NBC series, Law & Order, as Detective Ana Cordova, and later guest-starred on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Damages and Blue Bloods. Navedo also has appeared in the number of films such as Double Take, Washington Heights, El Cantante and Remember Me.

Navedo has had recurring roles on How to Make It in America, Golden Boy and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit from 2011 to 2013. In 2014, she was cast in the series regular role Xiomara "Xo" Villanueva, Jane's mother in The CW comedy-drama series, Jane the Virgin.

Jane the Virgin’s Moms on How Their Moms Influence Their Characters

Jane the Virgin returned Monday night for the back half of its second season, and outside the usual intrigue, the heart of the episode were the moments between the Villanueva women, who clash over how best to put Mateo to sleep. The show has always explored the relationship between single mothers and their daughters with depth and nuance, and since the birth of Jane's baby, it's become even more adept at handling themes of motherhood with emotional realism. Vulture caught up with Ivonne Coll (Alba) and Andrea Navedo (Xiomara) recently to talk about how profoundly their own mothers have influenced their characters.
