Founding Member, Former Research Director & Tenured Professor of Strategy, China Maritime Studies Institute at the U.S. Naval War College

Andrew Erickson serves as a professor of strategy at the U.S. Naval War College's China Maritime Studies Institute. He is a founding member of the institute and contributed significantly to its development during his tenure as the research director from 2021 to 2023. Erickson's expertise has been sought out globally, as evidenced by his flag officer-tailored education sessions in locations as diverse as Honolulu, Taiwan, and Naples, Italy. His knowledge extends beyond the classroom, with his role as an associate of the China Aerospace Studies Institute and his position as a visiting professor in residence at Harvard University's government department.

In addition to his teaching roles, Erickson was a visiting scholar at Harvard's Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and has been a research associate since 2008. His affiliations are numerous and prestigious, including his life membership in the Council on Foreign Relations and his role as an editorial board member of the Naval War College Review and Asia Policy. Erickson's contributions to the field have been recognized with several awards, including the NWC's Research Excellence Award and the National Bureau of Asian Research's Ellis Joffe Prize for PLA Studies. His work has also been featured in notable publications, including 38 articles co-authored for the Wall Street Journal's China Real Time Report from 2012 to 2017.

Erickson holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in international relations and comparative politics from Princeton University and a B.A. in history and political science from Amherst College. He is proficient in Mandarin Chinese and Japanese and has lived and worked in China, Japan, and Korea. In addition to his academic and professional accomplishments, Erickson is the co-editor, contributor, and series editor of Naval Institute Press's nine-volume "Studies in Chinese Maritime Development" and the co-founder of the website www.chinasignpost.com.
