Andrew N. Liveris was the Company’s longest-serving CEO, during his more than 14-year tenure as Chairman and CEO, Andrew N. Liveris transformed Dow from a cyclical chemicals manufacturing company into one powered by science, driven by innovation and delivering solutions to the world. By combining the breadth and depth of Dow’s scientific heritage with a new, robust portfolio of market-facing businesses, he assured Dow’s place as an industry leader for generations to come.
To accelerate the company’s reinvention, Liveris led the company in groundbreaking transactions including the acquisition of Rohm and Haas, the biggest acquisition in Dow’s history; the creation of Sadara, a joint venture with Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest integrated chemical facilities ever built in a single phase; the assumption of full ownership of Dow Corning; and the completion of the historic merger of Dow and DuPont – one of the most significant deals in the history of the chemical industry. He was also among the first global CEOs to recognize the potential for shale gas discoveries in the U.S. to fuel a manufacturing resurgence, initiating a comprehensive series of strategic investments on the U.S. Gulf Coast.
Central to Liveris’ strategy for transforming the company was reestablishing Dow as a science leader and technology innovator. As a result, the company’s powerful R&D engine delivers meaningful, science-based innovations at a rate of ten times as many experiments as the Dow of a decade ago and eight times as many patents per year.
He was also a key force in driving Dow’s sustainability agenda, overseeing the creation of two of the company’s sets of decade-long sustainability goals. Under his leadership, sustainability became an integral part of the Company’s culture and business performance. Liveris’s vision was for Dow to redefine the role of business in society by advancing the well-being of humanity while helping lead the transition to a sustainable planet and a better world.
An international advocate for the criticality of manufacturing to the long-term health of national economies, Liveris authored Make It in America, a book which presents a comprehensive set of practical policy solutions and business strategies for the United States to achieve an economic resurgence and revitalize its manufacturing sector. He was tapped by the Trump Administration to help identify new ways to spur innovation and revitalize the U.S. manufacturing sector, and served as Co-Chair of U.S. President Obama's Advanced Manufacturing Partnership steering committee and as a member of the U.S. President’s Export Council. He was also an active participant in the Department of Labor’s Task Force on Apprenticeship Expansion.
Liveris sits on the Board of Directors of IBM, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Novonix, and he is a member of the Concordia Leadership Council and the Australian government’s Industry Growth Centres Advisory Committee. He serves as a trustee of Saudi Aramco, The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), the California Institute of Technology and the United States Council for International Business. He is also on the board of the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) and serves as Co-Chair of the Saudi-U.S. CEO Forum. Previously, he was Vice Chair of the Business Roundtable and an Executive Committee Member and past Chairman of the U.S. Business Council.
In 2014, Liveris was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia for services to international business.
