Andy Murray

Former Professional Tennis Player, Three-time Grand Slam Champion & Two-Time Olympic Gold Medalist

Sir Andrew Barron Murray OBE is a renowned British professional tennis player from Scotland. He held the world No. 1 ranking in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for 41 weeks and ended 2016 as the year-end No. 1. Murray boasts three Grand Slam singles titles, with victories at Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016, and the US Open in 2012. Throughout his career, he has reached eleven major finals and maintained a top 10 ranking for nearly a decade. Additionally, Murray has claimed 46 ATP Tour singles titles, including 14 Masters 1000 events, and is a double Olympic gold medalist.

Murray's journey began under the guidance of his mother Judy and alongside his brother Jamie. At 15, he relocated to Barcelona to train at the Sánchez-Casal Academy, marking a pivotal moment in his development. He turned professional during the era dominated by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and made an immediate impact by breaking into the top 10 in 2007 at the age of 19. By 2010, he joined Federer, Nadal, and Novak Djokovic in the esteemed Big Four, a group that dominated men's tennis in the 2010s. Despite early struggles in major finals, Murray's breakthrough came in 2012 when he won the US Open, becoming the first British male major singles champion since Fred Perry in 1936. That same year, he also secured a gold medal in singles and a silver in mixed doubles at the London Olympics.

Murray reached six more major finals, triumphing at Wimbledon in both 2013 and 2016. His career peak occurred in 2016 when he reached three major finals and successfully defended his Olympic title in Rio, becoming the first player to win two Olympic gold medals in singles. Murray also ascended to the world No. 1 ranking for the first time that year, cementing his status by winning the Tour Finals over Djokovic. However, injuries in subsequent years caused him to drop out of the top 100 in 2018, although he has since made a steady return to the top 50.

Known for his all-court playing style, Murray excels in defense, returning serve, and point construction. He is celebrated for having one of the best two-handed backhands on the ATP Tour. Murray is regarded as a national hero in the UK, having revitalized the country's presence in men's tennis, most notably by leading the Great Britain Davis Cup team to victory in 2015.

An outspoken feminist, Murray made headlines by hiring former women's champion Amélie Mauresmo as his coach, becoming only the second top-10 ATP player to be coached by a woman. His contributions to tennis and his advocacy for gender equality continue to make him a prominent and influential figure in the sport.
