Materials Scientist, Biological Engineer and Professor at MIT

Andrea Belcher is the James Mason Crafts Professor of Biological Engineering, Materials Science, and the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Medicine at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the former head of the Department of Biological Engineering at MIT. With a distinguished career spanning decades, Belcher has established herself as a leading authority in biomaterials, biomolecular materials, organic-inorganic interfaces, and solid-state chemistry and devices. Her relentless pursuit of knowledge and excellence has led to significant advancements in various interdisciplinary areas, including energy, electronics, environmental sustainability and medicine.

Belcher's primary research focus is evolving new materials for energy, electronics, the environment, and medicine. Her multidisciplinary approach has facilitated the development of materials that hold promise in addressing pressing global challenges and improving human health. A serial entrepreneur, Belcher has founded five companies, translating her research findings into real-world applications. She also holds 36 patents.

A MacArthur Fellow, Belcher has been named by TIME magazine as a climate-change hero. She joined the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology in 2022.
