Angela Dunning

Trademark & Copyright Lawyer Focused on AI Legal Issues

Angela Dunning is a litigation partner in the Silicon Valley office of Cleary Gottlieb, an elite international law firm with offices across the globe. Practicing at the cutting edge of the generative AI revolution, Dunning is defending leading AI developers against copyright and other claims arising from the training and output of both diffusion and large language models. She also counsels developers and users of AI models, as well as content creators, on the rapidly evolving regulatory and legal landscape to help them identify and mitigate risk.

In addition to the safe, lawful, and fair development and deployment of AI tools, Dunning’s practice focuses on representing technology companies in copyright, trademark, trade secret, advertising, unfair competition, and right of publicity cases, as well as individuals and human rights organizations in pro bono civil rights and asylum work. She handles both trials and high-profile federal appeals, interfaces with the U.S. Copyright Office and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on policy, is a recognized thought leader and frequent speaker on AI legal issues throughout the country, and teaches trademark law at UC Berkeley School of Law.

In 2008, Dunning served as an assistant district attorney for the City and County of San Francisco under then-District Attorney Kamala Harris, prosecuting criminal cases. In 2022, she taught trademark law and branding at UC Berkeley School of Law. She received her bachelor's degree from UC San Diego and her JD from UC Davis' School of Law.
