Ann Shoket

Former Editor in Chief of Seventeen Magazine, Author of "The Big Life"

As editor-in-chief of Seventeen magazine from 2007-2014, Ann Shoket lead the iconic fashion and beauty publication through a period of great innovation, strengthening its position as an important rite of passage that helps more than 13 million readers become confident, self-assured young women. As a thought leader for millennials, Shoket created multiplatform campaigns around the most significant issues facing young women today: body image, bullying, and finding their power in the world. She also forged a high-profile partnership with the White House and Michelle Obama to promote initiatives for health, education and young women’s leadership.

Shoket spearheaded massive brand building for Seventeen, pioneering new platforms so that girls can be a part of the Seventeen universe wherever they are: on the Web, in print, on TV, on social-networking platforms, in video, and on their cell phones.

Within her first year at the helm, Shoket led the magazine to become the number one teen magazine on the newsstand, the first time the magazine had held that position since Hearst purchased it in 2003. It remained number one throughout her stewardship. With an editorial brand strategy of “Seventeen Everywhere,” Shoket grew Seventeen’s digital presence, leading seventeen.com to record-breaking traffic and engagement. The brand is among the top magazines on Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, and YouTube. In addition, Shoket oversaw the creation of the first app developed at Hearst to reach 1 million downloads and later led the development of Seventeen for the iPhone—a first-of-its-kind app that unified all of the brand’s social, video, Web, and print content and reimagined the magazine experience as a mobile newsfeed.

Shoket has been named to Forbes’ Most Powerful U.S. Fashion Magazine Editors list. She has also been honored by the Young Women’s Leadership School, the Girl Scouts, and Planned Parenthood.
