Anna Hirsch was born in Germany and grew up in Luxembourg. She read Natural Sciences with a focus on Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. She spent her third year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as an exchange student. For her Master.s project, she returned to Cambridge to work in the group of Prof. Steven V. Ley. She received her Ph.D. from the ETH Zurich in 2008. Her research was carried out in the group of Prof. Fran?ois Diederich and was aimed at the rational design and the synthesis of the first inhibitors for an enzyme as a novel approach to treat malaria. During this period, her interest in neglected diseases such as malaria was sparked and continued to grow ever since. Subsequently, she joined the group of Nobel laureate Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn at the Institut de Science et d.Ing?nierie Supramol?culaires (ISIS) in Strasbourg, dealing with different projects including the design and synthesis of dynamic polymers inspired by proteins with potential applications in medicine. In 2010, she took on a position as assistant professor of bio-organic chemistry at the University of Groningen. Her research is focused on the rational design and synthesis of small-molecule inhibitors for targets involved in neglected diseases. She is also actively engaged in teaching and outreach activities such as the recruitment of new undergraduate students.
