Anthony Colannino      

President of Leading & Teaching for Growth

For more than 20 years, Anthony Colannino has dedicated himself to creating atmospheres where adults and children feel happy, healthy, and successful. This work can be challenging at times but rewarding when schools, districts, and businesses create cultures where learning is the focal point.

Colannino has worked in just about every school setting from the rural poverty of eastern Washington to the affluence of the Metro Boston area. Regardless of the size or socio-economic status of districts he has led or consulted, Colannino brings a contagious joy and passion to the important task of educating children, who will become our future. He takes great pride in the lives he’s been able to positively impact through teaching, leading schools and supporting school leaders in districts big (Philadelphia, Bronx, Compton, and Cincinnati) and small. Those lives include his students from Boston who now study law, medicine, and education at the highest university levels, the staffs he has inspired to become better educators, and his clients who still reach out to him for support long after his consultancy has ended.

Prior to joining ICLE, Colannino developed his own education consultancy, Leading and Teaching for Growth, and worked at the e-learning company Dr. Carol Dweck co-founded, Mindset Works Inc., helping school districts across the country understand and operationalize Dr. Dweck’s growth mindset research through leadership development and improved teacher practice. He also served as an elementary school principal in the Boston area and taught fifth grade.

Colannino lives with his wife and two children in a suburb of Boston. He continues to challenge himself while using a growth mindset to learn and grow. Recently, he learned how to ski on the mountains of New Hampshire and now dreams of snow, even when the sun shines brightly.

Curating Cultures of Hope and Growth

Given our current educational challenges – several years of lost learning, widening opportunity gaps based on inequities and a deep divide between what children need for social emotional well-being and our country’s inability to provide it – there has never been a more important time to find inspiration in hope: our collective belief in what all children can become and growth: the many, varying and inclusive opportunities to support both student and educator learning.

Throughout this interactive session participants will learn how to:

  • curate cultures of hope and growth by revealing their own beliefs on learning
  • understand and internalize the mindsets that helped support their learning as a student, and how to unleash growth-minded practices to inspire those under their care
  • target the adult behaviors that model growth for all and
  • share the narratives that shapes how children and adults learn through success and adversity.

Igniting Passion and Engagement Through Improved Feedback

As school leaders continue to contend with the symptoms of a worldwide pandemic – greater apathy toward learning, a rise in social, emotional dysregulation, overworked staff and the constant barrage of change necessitated by trying to maintain the health and well-being of all stakeholders – an all-too common wish is to reignite the passion and purpose of learning for children and adults alike. There are avenues for garnering greater engagement from staff and students when leadership concentrates on and improves what they do and say to inspire those under their care.

Through this interactive keynote and breakout sessions, school leaders will better understand, internalize and operationalize growth-minded approaches toward leadership. Building leaders will be provided the opportunities to consider their educational journey that started as a student and currently informs their practice. By participating in whole group activities, think-pair-share and even paper and pencil attempts at learning, attendees will be given the guidance, space and invitation to drive their own learning, so they can do the same for their staff.

Outcomes will include a greater understanding of growth mindset and how the theory applies in actions and behaviors like providing productive feedback on performance, curating cultures of growth from all stakeholders and framing engagement through not only their perspectives, but by harnessing the diversity in learning that’s available in every school, every day.
