April Capone Almon

Mayor April beat a 10 year incumbent by 25 votes to become the first woman and youngest person ever elected in the Town of East Haven and the youngest woman ever elected to the office of Mayor anywhere in the State of Connecticut.

Elected to her first term in 2007, Mayor April Capone Almon a life long East Haven resident but a newcomer to the Democratic Town Committee came out of the shadows to beat a 10 year incumbent by 25 votes.  The margin of less than ½ of 1% triggered two recounts before she was sworn in on November 17, 2007 to become the first woman and youngest person ever elected in the Town of East Haven and the youngest woman ever elected to the office of Mayor anywhere in the State of Connecticut.  This victory stunned a deeply entrenched Republican ‘Good Old Boy’ network which Mayor April still continues to rally against now in her second term.

Some of the highlights of her story include;

Girly Tough Ain’t Enough:

During her 2009 re-election campaign Mayor April Capone Almon was arrested by her own Police Department for ‘interfering’ with police.  This was a campaign ploy by the ‘Good Old Boys’ to tarnish her image in an election.  The charges were later dropped as it was proven that Mayor Capone Almon was within her authority and standing up for the people of East Haven.

No Cronies Allowed!:

She credits one of her main accomplishments as building a community water park on a parcel of land slated by her predecessor to be used as the location for a catering hall—built with millions of taxpayer dollars and to be staffed with Republican cronies.

Got Two, Give One:

Just a few months ago Mayor April donated a kidney to a constituent she barely knew.  After reading the man’s plight on Facebook she quietly offered to get tested to see if she could be a match. She was determined a match and an acceptable donor.  The transplant was a success and she still managed to hold a regularly scheduled staff meeting in her hospital room 24 hours after surgery.

Mayor April Capone Almon still maintains the full-time position of serving as CEO of a municipality of 29,000 residents, 1,000 employees and an $85 million budget.  Her story of strength and perseverance in breaking the glass ceiling of local politics has inspired women and men alike across the State of CT. Hear her story in person for yourself.
