Arvind Panagariya is Professor of Economics & Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Indian Political Economy at Columbia University. He is also the Director of Columbia Program on Indian Economic Policies and a Non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, Washington DC and at the National Council on Applied Economic Research, New Delhi.

In 2012, The Government of India honored Panagariya with Padma Bhusan, one of the highest civilian honors bestowed by the country in any field, for his contributions in the field of economics and public policy.

In the past, Panagariya has been the Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank and Professor of Economics and Co-director, Center for International Economics, University of Maryland at College Park. He has also worked with the World Bank, IMF, WTO, and UNCTAD in various capacities. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Economics from Princeton University.

Panagariya has written or edited a dozen books. His latest book India: The Emerging Giant (2008, OUP, New York, 544 pages) was listed as a top pick of 2008 by the Economist magazine and described as the “definitive book on the Indian economy” by Fareed Zakaria of the CNN and Time magazine. His forthcoming books include India's Tryst with Destiny: Debunking Myths that Undermine Progress and Addressing New Challenges (October 2012, HarperCollins, India), India’s Reforms: How They Produced Inclusive Growth (March 2012, OUP, USA) and Reforms and Economic Transformation in India (March 2012, OUP, USA) (all three with Jagdish Bhagwati). His past books include The Economics of Preferential Trade Agreements, 1996, AEI Press (with Jagdish Bhagwati), The Global Trading System and Developing Asia, 1997, Oxford University Press (with M.G. Quibria and N. Rao), and Lectures on International Trade, 1998, MIT Press (with J. Bhagwati and T.N. Srinivasan). His scientific papers have appeared in the American Economic Review, Quarterly journal of Economics, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of International Economics, and International Economic Review and his policy papers have appeared in the Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, World Economy and Finance and Development.

Panagariya is an editor of the India Policy Forum, a journal co-founded by the Brookings Institution, Washington DC and the National Council on Applied Economic Research, New Delhi. He is also the founding editor of the Journal of Policy Reform, which he edited with Dani Rodrik during 1996-2001. He is currently an Associate Editor of Economics and Politics and the Journal of International Trade and Economic Development.

Panagariya writes a monthly column in the Economic Times, India’s top financial daily and an occasional column in the Times of India, the world’s largest circulated English daily newspaper. He has also written guest columns in the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Hindustan Times, Hindu, India Today and Outlook. He has appeared on a large number of television channels including the PBS (USA: the Jim Lehrer Newshour and Foreign Exchange with Fareed Zakaria) CNN (International, Asia) BBC World News, CNBC (USA, Asia, India) and ABC (USA: World View) as also radio stations including Chicago Public Radio, Minnesota Public Radio and BBC Radio.
