Balaji Prabhakar  

Professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Stanford University

Balaji Prabhakar is a professor in the departments of electrical engineering and computer science at Stanford University. His research interest is probability theory and its applications, notably in developing algorithms for use in large-scale distributed systems like the Internet and data centers. Prabhakar has led the development of industry standards for computer network congestion management. Recently, he has focused on societal networks including transportation, electricity grids, health-care systems, and recycling; and is leading projects in Bangalore, Singapore, and at Stanford to reduce traffic congestion, fuel, and pollution costs. Prabhakar is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He has been a Terman Fellow at Stanford and a fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundatoin. Prabhakar was awarded the Rollo Davidson Prize from Cambridge University and the Erlang Prize from the Applied Probability Society.
