Barbara Mancini

Advocate for Medical Aid-In-Dying

Dying of diabetes, kidney failure, and heart problems, Barbara’s father, Joe Yourshaw, went into hospice where he planned to die peacefully. He had done everything right: completed his advance directive, signed a do-not-resuscitate order and designated his daughter, Barbara Mancini –herself a registered nurse–his healthcare proxy. He was ready to die – at home.
Instead, his daughter Barbara endured a yearlong nightmare of legal persecution for having simply handed her suffering father his prescribed morphine, which he took. After being revived against his wishes, Joe spent his final days in a hospital, prevented from seeing his daughter while still conscious and knowing she was facing jail time for caring for him. Today, Barbara advocates on behalf of death with dignity.
