Beau Lotto

Founder & CEO of the Lab of Misfits; Professor of Neuroscience at University of London Goldsmiths College

Dr Beau Lotto is the Founder of the Lab of Misfits, the world’s first neuro-design studio. The lab creates unique ‘experiential-experiments’ that places the public at the centre of the process of discovery. By spanning social and personal boundaries between people, brands and institutions, their aim is to create insights into what it is to be human. Misfits gives audiences and brands the opportunity to not only see differently, but to embody that understanding. Beau has given two mainstage TED talks, which have amassed over five million views. He has also spoken at Google Zeitgest, made significant programme contibutions to BBC's Horizon, National Geographic Channel and PBS. Beau is also th

Beau Lotto is a neuroscientist fascinated with human perception. He teaches that the senses deliver data to the brain, and it is the brain that assembles that data into information that is meaningful to a human being. Or, as Lotto puts it, “We never see the world as it actually is, but only the world that is useful for us to see.” Lotto is also the founder of Lottolab, a cross between an art studio and a science lab where the public interacts with striking sculptures and illusions—and from which he mines data for his studies in human perception. His passion shows itself in his unorthodox, interactive approach to research. Lotto uses art and performance as a mass experiment to teach people that what they perceive as unbiased reality is actually a neurologically-produced response to data, grounded in personal and biological history.
