English Actor Best Known for "Sherlock;" Ambassador for the Motor Neurone Disease Association

Benedict Cumberbatch is a British screen actor best known for his role in the BBC television show Sherlock. He has also appeared in Hollywood films such as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, War Horse, Star Trek: Into the Darkness and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Cumberbatch began his career with roles in classic plays and small television shows. In 2004, he portrayed a young Stephen Hawking coping with the early stages of motor neuron disease in Hawking. Cumberbatch's performance earned him a BAFTA nomination.

In 2010, BBC aired a modern adaptation of the story of Sherlock Holmes, titled Sherlock. The series won widespread praise and granted stardom to Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock.

Cumberbatch has won several stage and screen acting awards and received both Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for his role in the acclaimed 2014 Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game. In 2016 he starred in the titular role of the Marvel film Dr. Strange and reprised his role in Avengers: Infinity War in 2018.

Other notable roles include William Pitt in the historical film Amazing Grace, protagonist Stephen Ezard in the miniseries thriller The Last Enemy, Bernard in Small Island, Major Stewart in Steven Spielberg's War Horse, and Khan Noonien Singh, in J. J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness.

In addition to acting, Cumberbatch has been an ambassador of the Motor Neurone Disease Association since 2004. The MND Association is a charity working to provide care, support, and research for people affected by ALS.
