Bernie Siegel

Founder of ECaP, Author, Patient Empowerment Advocate

Dr. Bernie Siegel, who prefers to be called Bernie, was born in Brooklyn, NY. He attended Colgate University and Cornell University Medical College, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha, graduating with honors. His surgical training occurred at Yale New Haven Hospital, West Haven Veterans Hospital, and the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He retired from the practice of general and pediatric surgery in 1989 to focus on patient advocacy and public speaking.

In 1978, Bernie Siegel originated Exceptional Cancer Patients (ECaP), a specific form of individual and group therapy utilizing patients' drawings, dreams, images, and feelings. ECaP is founded on "carefrontation," a safe, loving therapeutic confrontation that facilitates personal lifestyle changes, personal empowerment, and healing. The physical, spiritual, and psychological benefits from this approach inspired him to advocate for the potential for healing in everyone, aiming to humanize medical education and medical care.

Bernie and his wife Bobbie, along with their five children and eight grandchildren, reside in a suburb of New Haven, Connecticut. Their home, filled with various interests and activities, continues to serve as a vibrant hub for their family. Bernie's first book, "Love, Medicine & Miracles" was published in 1986, marking a significant shift in his career towards writing and public speaking. Subsequent works include "Peace, Love & Healing," "How To Live Between Office Visits," and "Prescriptions for Living," with his most recent publications aimed at empowering patients and enhancing immune system competency through survival behavior.

Bernie's work extends beyond writing and therapy; he actively engages in keynote speaking, focusing on themes such as patient empowerment, the psychology of illness, and the art of healing. His message promotes a holistic approach to healthcare that incorporates compassion, humor, and a deep respect for the spiritual and ethical dimensions of life. Recognized globally for his contributions, Bernie was honored in May 2011 by the Watkins Review of London, England, as one of the Top 20 Spiritually Influential Living People on the Planet.

Bernie Siegel's influence continues as he travels extensively with Bobbie, sharing his experiences and techniques with a broad audience, and remains committed to teaching and empowering individuals about the interplay of consciousness, spirituality, and wellness. His dedication to these principles has inspired countless individuals to embrace a proactive approach to health and wellness, integrating timeless wisdom into everyday life challenges.
