Bessma Momani is a nonresident senior fellow in the Global Economy and Development Program at the Brookings Institution.

Dr. Bessma Momani has a Ph.D. in political science with a focus on international political economy. She is an associate professor at the Balsillie School of International Affairs at the University of Waterloo in Canada. She is also a senior fellow at the Centre for International Governance and Innovation, a Canadian think tank on global governance. In 2010, she was a visiting fellow at the Amman Institute, a research centre to improve local governance in the Middle East.

Momani has received a number of awards and prizes for her research and work. She is currently undertaking an International Development Grant funded by Canada’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research (SSHRC) on change in urban development in the Middle East caused by an influx of Arab Gulf investments. She is co-organizing a conference at Columbia University’s Amman campus in March 2012 to present regional findings of this study. Momani was also the recipient of a previous SSHRC grant on the reform of the International Monetary Fund’s Executive Board. She is the recipient of a numerous awards on her writings including the University of Waterloo’s Lois Claxton Humanities and Social Sciences Endowment Fund Award to support the publication of her co-edited volume studying Arab-Canadians.

Bessma Momani has authored and co-edited over six books including: Shifting GeoEconomic Power of the Gulf, Ashgate (2011); From Desolation to Reconstruction: Iraq’s Troubled Journey, Wilfrid Laurier University Press, (2010); Canada and the Middle East: In theory and practice, Wilfrid Laurier University Press, (2007); IMF-Egyptian Negotiations; American University of Cairo Press, (2006); Twentieth-Century World History, Thomson-Nelson. (2006). She is also the author of over 40 scholarly journal articles and book chapters that have examined the IMF, the World Bank, the Financial Stability Board, petrodollars, regional trade agreements in the Middle East and economic liberalization throughout the Arab Gulf and the Middle East. Among the journals that Dr. Momani has published in include Review of International Political Economy, Asian Affairs, Global Society, Journal of International Relations and Development, New Political Economy, International Journal, Canadian Journal of Political Science, and Review of International Organizations, Middle East Review of International Affairs, World Economy, New Political Economy, Journal of the Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Studies, Journal of European Integration, World Economy, and World Economics.
