Leadership Expert; Author of "Take the Lead"; former COO of the '08 Obama for America Campaign

Betsy Myers is a speaker and author who is dedicated to working with organizations and individuals to help shape the next generation of leaders.

She continues to be one of the country's leading speakers on the subject of leadership development. In her new book, Take the Lead: Motivate, Inspire, and Bring Out the Best in Yourself and Everyone Around You, she outlines her principles, which are rooted in the authentic leadership that Myers has developed over the last decade in academia and public service. Over the last few years, she has crisscrossed the country and traveled abroad to speak on topics of leadership, and currently serves as founding director of the Center for Women and Business at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Prior to her appointment at Bentley, Myers was President Obama's Chief Operating Officer during the Obama for America campaign. She joined the campaign in 2007 and was tasked with the challenge of building a $100 million organization; she established the campaign with a business operation model and customer service mentality. She also represented the campaign as a senior adviser and as chair of Women for Obama. These efforts included a working partnership with Women for Obama and the DNC's Women's Leadership Forum.

In addition, she held the title of executive director for the Center of Public Leadership at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. She also launched and was the first director of the White House Office of Women's Initiatives and Outreach during the Clinton Administration, where she served as the President's senior adviser on women's issues. She played a critical role in Clinton's reelection effort in 1996 and figured prominently in shaping the Administration's legislative agenda on such issues as domestic violence, reproductive choice, breast cancer, and women in business.

Myers also served as the associate deputy administrator for entrepreneurial development in the US Small Business Association, and spent six years building Myers Insurance and Financial Services, based in Los Angeles, where she specialized in the small business and the women's market, providing insurance and retirement planning.

Speaking on such topics as leadership, career development, teamwork, women's issues, and diversity, Betsy Myers has inspired hundreds of audiences ranging in size from groups of ten to over 750 people. The presentations she delivers range from authentic leadership to work-life balance. She has worked with senior leaders and teams at such companies as DuPont, Procter & Gamble, MetLife, Southwest Airlines, and Johnson & Johnson, as well as organizations ranging from Young Presidents' Organization (YPO) to Elliott Masie's "Learning 2010."

Authentic Leadership and the Leader in You

During the past 50 years, leadership scholars have conducted more than 1,000 studies to determine definitive styles, characteristics, or personality traits of the ideal leader. None have produced a clear profile or consistent skills, traits, or styles that led to success, rather; leadership emerged from our life stories. The New Paradigm of Leadership

Change is all around us and todays leaders are confronted with a changing work force. The command-and-control leadership style that worked in the past does not work today. In 2008, 70% of new entrants to the workplace were women and minorities. This changing workforce also includes generational differences, technology, global relationships, and womens roles. Betsy will discuss the important leadership skills needed not only for today but into the next decade while emphasizing diversity in the workplace.

Tracing her own career path from the financial services industry to her roles in the Clinton Administration, the Harvard Kennedy School Center for Public Leadership, and the Obama Presidential Campaign, Betsy brings perspective from her experiences as a successful female leader. Betsy explores the fundamental leadership skills of personal and interpersonal leadership development. She believes the hardest person you will ever manage is yourself. In this presentation, Betsy uncovers the key tools to use while thinking about and exploring personal leadership effectiveness.
