Beverly Kaye

Career Issues Expert / Author

Dr. Beverly Kaye is an internationally recognized authority on career issues, and retention and engagement in the workplace. She was named a "Legend" by the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD) – a designation given to "pioneers and prophets in the field of workplace learning and performance." The criteria that "Legends" must meet are: enduring impact and influence; originality of ideas; a career of sustained currency; work done more than five years ago is currently discussed, applied, and adapted; a substantive body of published work; and a contribution that raises the visibility, credibility and stature of the field. Dr. Kaye has also been named by Leadership Excellence as one of "North America’s 100 top thought leaders."

As founder and CEO of Career Systems International, and a best-selling author on workplace performance, Dr. Kaye has worked with a host of organizations to establish cutting-edge, award-winning talent development solutions. Her first book, Up is Not the Only Way, became a classic; although it was published in the early '80s, it is still very relevant today. In it she foresaw the effects that leaner, flatter organizations would have on individual careers and the subsequent need for workers to take charge of their own careers. She also developed systems for managers and employees to work together to help employees achieve their developmental goals.

With the fourth edition of Love 'Em or Lose 'Em: Getting Good People to Stay, a bestseller she coauthored, Dr. Kaye once again proved to be a pioneer in addressing one of the most pressing workplace problems of the 21st century: retaining and engaging employees. Translated into 20 languages and reaching an audience of over 500,000, Love 'Em or Lose 'Em holds managers accountable for keeping their best people and provides practical strategies to assist them in fulfilling that responsibility. In her follow-up companion best seller, Love it, Don’t Leave it: 26 Ways to Get What You Want at Work, Dr. Kaye and her coauthor show employees how they can find greater satisfaction in their current work lives.

Dr. Kaye is also the editor of Learning Journeys, an inspiring collection of essays from top management experts. Having written numerous articles in both professional journals and popular publications, she is frequently sought out by the news media for comment on workplace issues. She is the recipient of numerous professional awards, and her clients have received Best Practice Awards.

Dr. Kaye also has been a leader in developing innovative approaches to mentoring. Believing traditional one-on-one mentoring is less effective in today's organizational structures than it was in the past, she developed an innovative "Mentworking" program, which combines mentoring and networking.

Among Career Systems International's clients are leading global organizations including ADM, American Express, Caterpillar, Citigroup, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, Marriott, and Morrison.

She holds a doctorate from UCLA, and completed graduate work at the Sloan School of Management at MIT.

Love It, Don’t Leave It: 26 Ways to Get What You Want at Work

Workplace surveys currently report that employees feel disenchanted, discouraged, and disengaged. If employees are not engaged, they withhold their energy and their commitment. Many stay put. They wait and watch for the economy to shift and opportunities to open. This does no one any good. Organizations lose. Employees lose. Dr. Kaye’s recent book, Love It, Don’t Leave It: 26 Ways to Get What You Want at Work places some responsibility for workplace satisfaction in the hands and hearts of the individual.

Love ’Em or Lose ’Em: Keeping the Talent on Your Team

Regardless of the state of the economy, organizations need to hold on to their talent. With a 10 million worker shortage by 2010, no organization can afford to remove this subject from their radar screen. Managers must learn how to engage, motivate and retain the talent on their teams. Dr. Kaye’s bestseller, Love ’Em or Lose ’Em: Getting Good People to Stay provides “how-to’s” for managers who are already overwhelmed. Her specific advice, presented in an interactive speech or keynote, can be immediately implemented.

Up is Not the Only Way

While issues surrounding development are rated low on most organizational surveys, they rate high among top reasons employees stay with their organizations. All employees care about their careers and want to take control. Sometimes, though, they don’t know how and most managers wish these conversations could be easier. Beginning 20 years ago with the publication of her now classic book, Up Is Not The Only Way, Dr. Kaye has addressed employee, manager and executive audiences on the topic of career development.
