Instantly recognizable for her performance in the 1980 smash hit 10, Bo Derek was propelled into the American pop culture lexicon and became the standard for the “Perfect 10 Beauty.”
A Golden Globe nominated actress, her career accolades include box office successes in A Change of Seasons, Tommy Boy, and Malibu’s Most Wanted.
Outside the silver screen, Derek has devoted much of her time and energy to humanitarian efforts for people and animals alike. She served for nine years as national honorary chairperson for the Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Rehabilitation Special Events and oversaw four annual therapeutic and rehabilitative events designed to help veterans overcome their disabilities through competition. The amalgam of her worked resulted in her naming of Honorary Green Beret in 2002 by the Special Forces Association, joining only four other Americans to receive such an honor. Additionally, she has been appointed to the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees.
With her entrepreneurial and compassionate spirit in mind, Derek created Bless the Beasts, a line of pet products sold in stores nationwide that donates a portion of all sales to Canine Companions for Independence. Derek currently serves as a special envoy of the Secretary of State for Wildlife Trafficking and was appointed Commissioner of the California Horse Racing Board. Additionally, she is a board member of organizations WildAid and the Galapagos Conservancy in Ecuador. An avid horse woman, Derek also serves as spokeswoman along with trainer Nick Zito for the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, and was instrumental in the closing of the three horse slaughter plants remaining in the U.S. As a published author, Derek wrote Riding Lessons: Everything That Matters in Life I Learned from Horse, a candid look at the life of a California beach girl, who at a young age was thrown into fame by becoming the epitome of California’s desirable “it” girl.
