Bob Hurley
Iconic High School Basketball Coach
Bob Hurley has coached basketball at St. Anthony's High School in Jersey City, New Jersey since 1972, building a local program into a national powerhouse in a community where hard times are a constant reminder of a world that is both uncertain and unsympathetic. Hurley, known as a coach with an uncompromising passion for basketball, has taken kids from the streets of New Jersey and elsewhere and transformed young boys into young men who just happen to play winning basketball.
Presiding over what he calls a "benevolent dictatorship," Hurley has been more than a coach to his players; he has been a teacher, a father figure, advisor, mentor, and friend. Known to some as the "Patron Saint of St. Anthony's," Hurley is a strict disciplinarian who demands total commitment, self-control, and sacrifice both on and off the court.
Hurley has become an icon and a legend across the nation. He has spent a lifetime on the hardwood, unwavering in his pursuit of elevating the mind, body, and spirit of the young men he coaches. The victories and championships are there to count, but the true measure of the man is the scores of young lives he has permanently touched.

Benevolent Dictatorship
In a city mired in endless decay, where the youth suffer through all the horrors of urban blight, hope comes in a most unassuming form: a tiny brick schoolhouse run by two Felician nuns where a singular basketball genius takes teenagers from the mean streets of Jersey City and turns them into champions on the hardcourt. Coach Bob Hurley had been working miracles at St. Anthony High School for over thirty years, winning state and national championships and offering his players rescue from their surroundings.
Hurley tells of his coaching methods and how he has been able to succeed for a number of years, despite difficult circumdstances. Hurley's message and lessons are not only relevant for coaches and athletes. His techinqiues to motivate and inspire others are important life lessons that can be used on and off the court for anyone looking to create change and lead.
