Bonnie Castillo

Nurse Advocate; Executive Director of National Nurses United

Bonnie Castillo is the Executive Director of National Nurses United (NNU), the largest organization of registered nurses in America. Previously, Castillo was Director of the union's Registered Nurse Response Network (RNRN), which deploys volunteer nurses to disaster areas. She spent 16 years at the California Nurses Association, working her way up from lead organizer to Director of Government Relations before moving over to NNU.

Castillo was among the first to call attention to the lack of personal protective equipment available to nurses across the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic, and fought layoffs and pay cuts that nurses faced despite their vital frontline work. Her commitment to the labor movement and unions is unwavering: she states that unions are the foundation of a democratic society.

In 2020, Castillo was named to the TIME 100 list of the most influential people in the world. The following year, Castillo appeared on The Nation's annual honor roll, which recognizes progressive activists and leaders who helped keep hope alive and set the groundwork for transformational change in 2021. Further, Forbes included her in their "50 Over 50" list in 2023.
