Brad Friedel

Soccer Goalkeeper in the Premier League; Aston Villa's Oldest Player Ever

Brad Friedel is an international soccer goalkeeper. He played 82 games for the United States Men’s national soccer team between 1992 and 2005 and represented his country at three FIFA World Cup tournaments, thus making him the third most-cap goalkeeper in the team’s history. He was nicknamed “The Human Wall” by fans for his brilliant performance during the 2002 World Cup.

Brad Friedel was the National Collegiate Athletic Association Champion 1990 and was selected for Division I First-Team-All-American (soccer) in 1991 and 1992 as the Top University Goalkeeper. In 1992, he won the Herman Trophy and was named University Player of the Year. Brad Friedel discontinued his university education to pursue a professional football career and practiced with Newcastle United F.C. as an on-loan player from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).

In 1995, his agent brought in a 1.1 million dollar deal that led to the transfer of Brad Friedel from USSF to a leading Turkey team, Galatasaray S.K. Two years later he moved to the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer and the same year, he was named the Major League Soccer (MLS) Goalkeeper of the year. In 1998, he went on to play for Liverpool football club.

In November 2000, Brad Friedel was taken in by Graeme Souness to play for Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer. One of his most memorable performances for Blackburn Rovers came in the League Cup Final in 2002, where he had a string of saves to his credit.

Brad Friedel was selected for the Premiership Starting XI at the end of 2002-2003 season in English football and was given the Blackburn Player of the Year award for the 15 clean sheets he kept. In a game against Charlton Athletic on February 21, 2004, Brad Friedel scored a goal from open play in the 90th minute, an occurrence which is considered rare for a goalkeeper. On April 14, 2006 Brad Friedel extended his contract with Blackburn Rovers and played for the club till he moved to Aston Villa in 2008.

Aston Villa's oldest player ever, Friedel's age of 39 years and 259 days surpassed the previous record held by Ernie Callaghan who last played for Villa against Grimsby Town in April 1947, aged 39 years and 257 days.

On December 26, 2012, it was announced that Friedel had signed a new contract with Spurs, keeping him at the club until 2014.
