Women, Fashion and the Media: Unrealistic Expectations?

The average woman is 5’4’ tall, weighs 164 lbs. and is a size 14. How and why did the ‘norm’ in fashion become size a 2…or even a size 0? What are these unrealistic images of models saying about our culture, and what are they telling the women and girls of America? Bradley Bayou, renowned fashion designer, knows this all too well. Always a champion of promoting healthy body image in fashion and Hollywood, he discovered that his own daughter was suffering from bulimia.

That she was able to hide it from him speaks to the insidiousness of the disease. She recovered with therapy, support and self-acceptance, and now Bayou is more committed than ever to education and awareness of eating disorders. He is an ambassador for NEDA: The National Eating Disorders Association, and is a member of the New York Department of Labor’s Child Performer Eating Disorders Prevention advisory board. He’s also lectured on the topic to Harvard Medical School. His unique perspective as both a fashion insider and father of two daughters makes for a provocative and fascinating discussion.

The Science of Sexy

As one of America’s top fashion designers, Bradley Bayou has dressed many of Hollywood’s most glamorous women. However, he will tell you that even they have insecurities about their bodies. While they have the luxury of designers, stylists and hair and makeup professionals to help them look their best, there is precious little information out there on how the rest of American women can do the same…how to minimize the areas they’re not crazy about and how they can accentuate the good parts. Yet, it can be done.

In this fun, informative and highly interactive presentation, Bayou shares his tips for making the most of your shape. It’s not about large or small. It’s about shape, cut, color, type of fabric…it’s all part of using clothing not as something to hide in, but as something that actually works to make you look even better than you thought possible. And it’s not just about fashion. It’s about knowing how to look, feel (and be) more confident so you can give the world the best you have to offer.
