A native of South Carolina, Brette Simmons grew up in the blue collar, farming community of Swansea, named after a town in Wales and located twenty-one miles south of the state capitol, Columbia. After a decorated high school athletic career, Brette earned a college football scholarship to Furman University where he was an outstanding performer on the field (two-time All Southern Conference first team) and in the classroom as a two-time All-Academic Southern Conference student-athlete. Simmons graduated cum laude with a B.A. degree in English in 1979, the same year he served as a graduate assistant football coach at Furman. After serving six years as a minister to college students at the University of Tennessee, he returned to coaching, serving of the football staff at N.C. State University from 1987-1999. Brette has spent the past twenty years in sales and customer service in public and private business. He currently resides in Lake Royale, NC and is a free lance writer, public speaker, and coach. He enjoys live music, college sports, reading, and spending time with his two sons, Perry and Landon.
