Bryan Fogel

Oscar-Winning Director, Sundance Award Winner, Investigative Filmmaker

Bryan Fogel is an American film director, producer, author, and playwright renowned for directing the Oscar-winning 2017 documentary thriller "ICARUS." The film follows Fogel and the renegade Russian scientist Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov—a key figure in Russia’s "anti-doping" program. Through numerous Skype calls, urine samples, and hormone injections, Fogel and Rodchenkov develop a close relationship amid startling accusations that Rodchenkov was involved in Russia’s state-sponsored Olympic doping scheme. Fogel aided Rodchenkov by providing legal counsel, immigration advice, and facilitating interactions with the FBI, CIA, and the DOJ, which culminated in Rodchenkov's hopeful political asylum. "ICARUS" unveiled a conspiracy lasting over four decades, documenting the most significant international sports scandal to date.

In December 2017, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) imposed a historic ban on Russia from the 2018 Winter Olympics, based largely on the evidence presented in "ICARUS." This ban represented an unprecedented rebuke by the IOC to a dominant Olympic nation, dealing a significant blow to Russia's national pride.

"ICARUS" not only won Best Documentary Feature at the 2018 Academy Awards, bringing Netflix its first Oscar, but it also received the inaugural Special Jury Orwell Award at the Sundance Film Festival and the Audience Choice Award at Sundance London. The documentary earned numerous other accolades, including the 2018 Edward R. Murrow Award for outstanding journalism, a BAFTA nomination, three Primetime Emmy nominations, a Critic’s Choice Award, and a Directors Guild of America nomination for Fogel as Best Director.

Fogel has appeared on various television platforms including ABC’s "Nightline," "Charlie Rose," "Late Night with Seth Meyers," "The Joe Rogan Experience," CNN, ESPN, and "The View." His contributions have been highlighted in numerous international publications.

Initially pursuing a career in Hollywood through stand-up comedy and acting, Fogel, alongside Sam Wolfson, co-wrote and initially starred in the off-Broadway comedy "Jewtopia." This play, which humorously explores the dating lives of two young men seeking Jewish partners, became one of the longest-running and fastest-recouping productions in off-Broadway history. Additionally, Fogel co-authored the book "Jewtopia: The Chosen Guide for the Chosen People" and directed, co-wrote, and produced the feature film adaptation of "Jewtopia," released in 2013. The film was honored with the audience choice award at the 2012 Malibu International Film Festival.

An avid amateur cyclist, Fogel has participated in the Haute Route. He currently resides in Los Angeles, CA.
