Bryan Roberts

Partner, Venrock

With biotech booming, life sciences specialist Bryan Roberts has been on a streak with exits in Castlight Health (IPO 2014), Receptos (IPO 2013), Zeltiq Aethetics (IPO 2011) and Ironwood Pharmaceuticals (IPO 2010). Castlight, which helps companies lower their health care costs, was incubated by Roberts (he is chairman) and went out with a $1.4 billion market cap on $13 million in revenue. Another of his companies, non-invasive prenatal testing company Ariosa Diagnostics, was acquired in Dec. 2014 by Roche. Current portfolio faves include Doctor on Demand and Achaogen (antibiotics for drug-resistant infections). Roberts does an annual three-day mountain trail run, dubbed the "Death March." And you thought venture capital was tough. Roberts cut his teeth as a banker at Kidder, Peabody & Co. before earning a Ph.D. in chemistry and chemical biology at Harvard.
