Candice DeLong has been called a real-life “Clarice Starling” and a female “Donnie Brasco.” She was on the front lines of some of the FBI’s most gripping and memorable cases, including being chosen as one of three agents to carry out the manhunt for the Unabomer in Lincoln, Montana. She has tailed terrorists, has gone undercover as a gangster’s moll, and has posed as the madam for a call-girl ring.
Now for the first time, she reveals the dangers and rewards of being a woman on the front lines of the world’s most powerful law enforcement agency. DeLong was, until her retirement in July 2000, the head field profiler in San Francisco for the FBI. She has served as the liaison to the Bureau’s world famous Behavioral Science Unit at Quantico and, as a member of the Child Abduction Task Force and former Registered Nurse, lectured widely on such issues as protecting women and children and preventing sexual abuse.
In her book, "Special Agent: My Life on the Front Lines as a Woman in the FBI," DeLong takes readers step by step through the profiling process and shows how she helped to solve a number of difficult, high-profile cases. One story she details is her role as a lead investigator on the notorious Tylenol Murder case.
She also gives the true, insider’s story behind the investigation that led to the arrest of the Unabomber-– including information that the media can’t or won’t reveal.
Female murderers are often times more horrifying and intriguing than their male counterparts. Their worlds are often defined by obsession, greed and revenge. DeLong and Dr. Janis Amatuzio, a forensic pathologist, provide deeper insight into the crimes and the women who commit them for "Deadly Women" on the Discovery Investigation Channel.
"Deadly Women" fuses bone-chilling storytelling, sumptuous drama and forensic fact in a bid to explore history’s most alluring female killers. Each episode profiles four famous cases from the past; killers and their victims are brought to life by elaborate dramatized reconstructions.
DeLong’s former reality series "What Should You Do?" aired on the Lifetime channel. Since the best way to protect yourself in an emergency is to be prepared, the show chronicled real women who survived harrowing situations and provided insider tips on dealing with dangerous dilemmas.
DeLong is also the subject of a riveting Lifetime Original Movie, "Killer Instinct: From the Files of Candice DeLong," actress Jean Smart deftly portrayed DeLong.
DeLong frequently appears on television, commenting on violent crime and personal safety. Her appearances include Meet the Press, 48 Hours, Hardball with Chris Matthews, MSNBC Investigates, NBC, ABC and CBS Evening News, TODAY, Good Morning America, CBS Early Show, CNN, MSNBC, FOX News and Court TV.
At the podium, DeLong offers glimpse of her work as a field profiler, one of the most fascinating and challenging branches of the FBI. She traces the unusual career path that led her to crime fighting and recounts the incredible obstacles she faced as a woman and as a fledgling agent.
