Captain Peter A. Garvin, USN

Captain Peter Allen Garvin, a naval aviator, is a military fellow, U.S. Navy, at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in New York. He most recently commanded Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing TEN from March 2011 through August 2012.

He graduated with merit from the United States Naval Academy earning a bachelor of science in aerospace engineering (astronautics track) in May of 1989. He also holds a master of science in national security strategy from the National War College.

His operational assignments include his first tour with the "Pelicans" of VP-45; Department Head tour with the "Mad Foxes" of VP-5 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida; Navigator aboard the amphibious assault ship USS KEARSARGE (LHD-3) and Flag Navigator for the embarked Amphibious Squadron SIX; and Executive and Commanding Officer of the "Fighting Tigers" of VP-8 on board NAS Brunswick, Maine. During his operational tours he participated in Operations NOBLE ANVIL, SHINING HOPE, ALLIED FORCE, JOINT GUARDIAN, AVID RESPONSE, ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM, and NEW DAWN.

Captain Garvin's shore assignments include: Flag Lieutenant to Commander, Patrol Wings Atlantic, Commander, Task Force EIGHTY FOUR (CTF-84) in Norfolk, Virginia; the "Pro's Nest" of VP-30 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida; Washington DC Placement Officer at the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Millington, Tennessee; and the Operational Plans and Joint Force Development Directorate (J-7) on the Joint Staff in Washington, DC.

His awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two), Air Medal (2 strike/flight), Navy Commendation Medal (four), Navy Achievement Medal (three), and various unit and campaign decorations.
