Mulligan's breakthrough role came as a 1960s schoolgirl in the coming-of-age drama film An Education, for which she won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and garnered her first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress. She went on to establish herself as one of the most acclaimed actresses of her generation, with roles in the dystopian romance Never Let Me Go, action drama Drive, which earned her a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, erotic drama Shame, and romantic drama The Great Gatsby.
