Carla Overbeck
Former Captain of the U.S. National Women's Soccer Team; Olympic Gold & Silver Medalist; Assistant Coach of Duke's Women's Soccer Team
Carla Overbeck, born May 9, 1968, grew up in Chapel Hill, NC, an went to college at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
One of her biggest feats is her participation with the U.S. National Team. She was one of the most prolific players in the history of the U.S. Women’s National Team, appearing in 168 national team contests. She was a member of the U.S. team that won the inaugural 1991 Women’s World Cup in China, she had captained the 1999 World Cup Champion, and was a part of the 1996 Olympic gold medal-winning, 2000 silver medal-winning, and the 1995 World Cup bronze medal-winning U.S. National Teams.
As for her WUSA Career, Overbeck scored the Golden Goal in the 2002 semifinal overtime game to propel the Carolina Courage to the Founders Cup Final. She was the Captain of the Courage in 2001, where she led the WUSA in blocks. Overbeck also was a second team WUSA All-Star.
For all of her accomplishments, in 2006 she was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
In her formative college years, she won four consecutive NCAA championships as a member of the UNC Tar Heels from 1986-89. North Carolina did not lose a single game during her tenure.
She is married to Greg Overbeck, and together they have a son, Jackson, born August 14, 1997 and a daughter, Carson Elizabeth, born March 5, 2003. She serves as an assistant coach at Duke and is the author of The Soccer Moms’ Cookbook.
