Carme Artigas
Expert in Big Data, Artificial Intelligence & Technological Innovation; Spain's Secretary of State for AI (2020-2023)
Carme Artigas is a Spanish executive and entrepreneur and a recognized expert in big data, artificial intelligence (AI) and technology innovation with more than 25 years of experience. The former Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence for the Spanish government who played a pivotal role in shaping the country's digital and AI strategies, she now utilizes her her deep understanding of technology's role in shaping modern societies and economies as the co-chair of the AI Advisory Body for the United Nations.
Throughout her career, Artigas has been a prominent figure in the Spanish startup ecosystem. She co-founded and served as CEO of Synergic Partners, a leading big data and AI consultancy firm based in Barcelona acquired by Telefónica in 2015; she served as its CEO until the end of 2018. Since 2019, her expertise in technology and data analytics has led to her involvement in various advisory roles and boards, contributing her knowledge on issues such as digital transformation, ethics in artificial intelligence, data-driven organizations, robotization, cultural change and industry 4.0, among other topics. This includes serving as a board member of Barcelona Tech City, a non-profit organization supporting the growth of Barcelona's tech ecosystem. Artigas is also a member of the Data Innovation Network of the Data Science Institute at Columbia University in New York City; a member of the Board of Directors at the Spanish Association of Directors (AED) and the European Startup Nations Alliance (ESNA) Advisory Board; and has been appointed Ambassador for Women in Data Science (WiDS) Worldwide by Stanford University.
Throughout her career, Artigas has been a vocal advocate for promoting diversity and inclusion in the tech industry, particularly encouraging more women to pursue careers in STEM fields.
She is a Senior Fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard's Kennedy School. She graduated with a degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.
