Charlie Mitchell

James Beard Award-Winning Chef; First & Only Black Michelin-Starred Chef in NYC

Chef Charlie Mitchell is a rising star in the culinary world, known for his innovative approach and dedication to excellence. As the executive chef and co-owner of Clover Hill, an intimate restaurant in Brooklyn, New York, Mitchell has garnered widespread acclaim for his refined and creative dishes that showcase seasonal ingredients and contemporary techniques.

Within one year of its grand reopening (following Covid closure), Clover Hill had already earned its first Michelin star and Mitchell was named Best Young Chef by Michelin. He is now the first Black chef in New York City to achieve such a feat and he is only the second Black chef nationally to earn that accolade. He also received the prestigious James Beard Award for Best Chef: New York State in 2024.

A Detroit native, Mitchell developed a passion and love for food from his grandmother. He attended culinary school for a few months but preferred on-the-job training, working in restaurants. At 19, he worked as a lunch cook under Nick Janutol at Forest in Birmingham and became a sous chef three years later. In search of broader horizons, he took executive chef and sous chef roles in culinary hotbeds like New York and Washington D.C. He honed his skills through various roles in renowned kitchens such as Betony, Eleven Madison Park, Villanelle and Bresca.
