Charlyne Yi

Writer, Artist, Composer & Actor; Known for "Time Bandits"

Charlyne Yi is an American actress, comedian, musician, and writer known for her unconventional comedic style and her ability to seamlessly blend absurdity with deep emotional resonance. Yi grew up in a creative environment that helped shape her eclectic career. She is of Filipino, Mexican, Korean, and Spanish descent, which has contributed to her unique perspective in the entertainment industry.

Yi first gained recognition for her quirky, deadpan humor in the world of stand-up comedy, where she incorporated elements of music, puppetry, and visual art into her performances. Her distinctive approach to comedy set her apart in a field dominated by traditional stand-up, quickly earning her a cult following.

Yi's breakout role came in 2007 with the hit film “Knocked Up,” where she played a small but memorable part that showcased her comedic talent. This led to her starring in and co-writing the 2009 film “Paper Heart,” a hybrid documentary and narrative feature in which she plays a fictionalized version of herself searching for the meaning of love. The film was well-received at the Sundance Film Festival and won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. Yi starred opposite Michael Cera, with whom she was rumored to have had a relationship, though both have stated it was fabricated by the media.

In addition to her work in film, Yi is also known for her role as Dr. Chi Park on the medical drama “House,” a performance showcased her ability to move beyond comedy and tackle more serious, dramatic roles.

Yi has made guest appearances on numerous television shows, including “Steven Universe,” where she voiced the character Ruby, and “We Bare Bears.” She has also appeared in films such as “This Is 40.” “The Disaster Artist,” and “Always Be My Maybe.” As a musician, Yi has played in bands and released solo music that blends elements of folk, experimental, and lo-fi genres.

Beyond her entertainment career, Yi is an outspoken activist, particularly advocating for mental health awareness and social justice. In recent years, she has been vocal about her experiences with sexual harassment in Hollywood and has supported movements like Time’s Up and Me Too.
