Charmaine Crooks  

Five Time Olympian

Chosen as one of the "Top 50 Women of Power" in the country, Five-time Olympian and 1984 Olympic silver medallist Charmaine Crooks has represented Canada for almost 20 years. As the first Canadian woman to run under two minutes over 800 metres, she has won gold medals at the Pan American, Commonwealth, World Cup and World Student Games. She had the honour of being named Flag Bearer at the Opening Ceremonies of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

Charmaine was a Board member of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter and Paralympic Games from the initial Bid phase in 1998 through to the Games, where she served on the Governance/Ethics and the Strategic Communications Committees.

Since 1994, she has been President/Founder of NGU Consultants. Her global sports consultancy provides marketing, communications and strategic counsel to major corporations and sport entities. Charmaine is a highly recognized speaker on topics ranging from inspiration, high performance, and Olympic Reflections, based on insights and experiences within her parallel worlds of sport and business.

Charmaine was elected to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to be as an IOC Member, and served on the inaugural IOC Ethics Committee, where she was instrumental in developing the IOC's Code of Ethics. She continues to sit on the IOC Athletes and IOC Press Commissions. In 2006, the IOC awarded her with the "IOC Women in Sport Trophy" for her longstanding contributions to promoting women in sport.

A current elected member of the Executive Board of the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), Charmaine played an integral role in Toronto's 2008 Olympic Bid and the successful Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games Bid 2015.

In 2007, Charmaine was elected Vice-President of the World Olympians Association, the alumni body representing over one hundred thousand known living Olympians. She is also a tireless volunteer for various local and global charities focusing on youth, women and health related matters. These include being one of the inaugural International Board members of "Right to Play" and other humanitarian initiatives. As a producer, in 1995, she created the “comic relief' style TV special, "No Laughing Matter to raise funds for breast cancer awareness.

Charmaine has worked as a freelance analyst or host on numerous sports and variety programs. She was the co-host of CBC's Cycle, and In the Company of Women and hosts the internationally televised award winning "World Athletics" Gala from Monaco.
